From the supplier: The Union Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) of Marysville, OH, examined the dynamics of its demand side management program with electric water heaters after realizing that its performance has not been satisfactory. The water heater control program had an integrity below 70% and the incentives were not achieving their goals. In response to these findings, Union REC re-organized its water heater system to improve the benefits of market share and load control, and to provide better value-added service to its members. The Water Heater Fitness Program, as the initiative is called, addresses the task of maintaining the integrity of radio control switches and controlling electric water heater load. This case illustrates the importance of regular checkup of demand side management programs.
